These orcas live in closely related pods and are known to feed on large runs of herring and mackerel around Norway (Tromso in particular) Type 1 orcas off Norway have been observed using a carousel feeding technique, herding herring into dense balls, then slapping with their tails to stun the fish. There is a very good chance you will witness this amazing behavior where humpback whales come in and up through a bait ball of herring (the bait ball is created by the herding orcas) with mouths gaping open wide, they scoop up as many fish as possible in unison. It’s quite an incredible site to witness (both in and out of the water).
