How Majestic Whale Encounters Began

A Lifelong Dream of Whales

From a very young age, I was captivated by whales and dolphins.  I dreamed endlessly of swimming in their underwater world - a fascination that continues to this day.  Growing up on the beautiful beaches of Cronulla, south of Sydney (what we fondly called "God's country"), I immersed myself in the ocean.  I learnt to scuba dive early, devoured every book I could find on marine life, and spent as much time in and around the sea as possible.  I had discovered a universe I never knew existed, one that inspired awe, respect, and a lifelong passion for the creatures of the deep.

Learning from Wildlife
After high school, I found work at a small wildlife park, which deepened my desire to connect with animals and understand them better.  This led to a role in zookeeping at Taronga's Western Plains Zoo, one of Australia's leading conservation-focused zoos.  While I loved my time there, my heart remained with the ocean and its magnificent inhabitants: whales, dolphins, and other large marine mammals.

The Turning Point: Swimming with Whales
In 2008, I had the extraordinary opportunity to volunteer on a whale swimming expedition in Vava'u, Tonga.  Despite having limited funds and a young family at home, I seized the chance.  Experiencing my first swim with humpback whales was life-changing - it cemented my path forward.

Turning a Dream into a Life
Shortly after, my husband Matt and I visited the islands of Ha'apai in Tonga.  Sitting on a white sandy beach, watching humpbacks play just 50 metres offshore, I realised I was truly "living the dream."  We knew this was more than a personal experience-it was a vision for a business that could allow others to safely and responsibly connect with these incredible animals in the wild.

A Family Partnership
As bookings began to grow, I sought a business partner who shared my passion and could complement my skills.  That partner was my younger sister, Sarah.  With a background in marketing, sales, and digital media, and an equal love for whales and the environment, Sarah brought expertise, organisation, and a deep commitment to personalised customer service. Together, we built Majestic Whale Encounters into a family-run business dedicated to offering authentic, responsible, and unforgettable whale swimming experiences.
